C'est la dernière année du secondaire pour Greg. L'étudiant se plaît à être invisible et détaché envers ses camarades de classe. En compagnie de Earl, il passe ses temps libres à réaliser de courts films qui s'inspirent et détournent plusieurs classiques du cinéma. Un jour, sa mère l'avise qu'une fille de son âge a la leucémie. Greg connaît peu Rachel, mais il finit par se rapprocher d'elle, lui rendant régulièrement visite. Son entourage aimerait bien que l'adolescent réalise un film pour la jeune malade, mais Greg a peur de s'humilier et de ne pas être à la hauteur.
