TORONTO, Ontario. (Apr. 11, 2016) – Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Canada presents THE DRIFTLESS AREA, a provocative and suspenseful crime drama where fate, mystery and romance collide. Based on the eponymous novel by award-winning author Tom Drury (“The End of Vandalism”) the film, which debuts on DVD and Digital April 26, 2016, stars Anton Yelchin (Star Trek series, Like Crazy) and Zooey Deschanel (TV’s “The New Girl,” 500 Days of Summer).
The story follows a bartender (Yelchin) who, after the death of his parents, comes back to his hometown only to fall into a dangerous situation involving a mysterious woman (Deschanel) and a violent criminal, played by Oscar® nominee John Hawkes (Best Supporting Actor, Winter’s Bone, 2011). Featuring a top-notch supporting cast that includes Alia Shawkat (TV’s “Arrested Development,” The Final Girls), Aubrey Plaza (TV’s “Parks and Recreation,” Safety Not Guaranteed), Ciarán Hinds (TV’s “Game of Thrones,” There Will Be Blood) and Oscar® nominee Frank Langella (Best Actor, Frost/Nixon, 2009), THE DRIFTLESS AREA was an Official Selection at 2015’s Tribeca Film Festival, Aruba International Film Festival and Flyway Film Festival. The DVD includes the featurette “Making The Driftless Area,” in which the cast and crew discuss the story behind the film, the characters, and working with Director Zachary Sluser.
Synopsis: Pierre (Anton Yelchin) returns to his hometown after the death of his parents and falls under the spell of the enchanting, mysterious Stella (Zooey Deschanel). As their relationship deepens, Pierre finds himself in a dangerous situation with a volatile criminal (John Hawkes) who abruptly altered the course of Stella’s life. Also starring Aubrey Plaza, Frank Langella, Alia Shawkat and Ciaran Hinds.
THE DRIFTLESS AREA marks the feature directorial and screenwriting debut of Zachary Sluser, co-written by Tom Drury. It was produced by Aaron L. Gilbert (Daydream Nation, Son of a Gun) and Keith Kjarval (Inland Empire, Welcome to Me). Executive producers are Jason Cloth, G Scott Paterson, Alan Simpson, Elika Portnoy, Nicole Romano, John Raymonds, Margot Hand, David Guy Levy, Ben Ruffman, and Kurt Rauer.
It has a run time of approximately 96 minutes and is rated 14A.
