La mort de son mari a laissé un vide immense chez Marnie. Lorsque sa fille scénariste déménage à Los Angeles, elle décide de lui rendre visite. Lori déprime sérieusement depuis que son copain l'a laissée et ce n'est pas avec une mère envahissante qu'elle arrivera à écrire. Marnie fait tout pour donner un sens à sa vie, payant les dépenses liées au mariage d'une amie de sa progéniture tout en convainquant un vendeur de reprendre les études. Elle fait même tourner la tête d'un ancien policier. Puisque Lori doit s'envoler pour New York pour le travail, cela donne une raison à sa mère de la rejoindre...

Rose Byrne (“Damages”) and Oscar®winner J.K. Simmons (Best Supporting Actor, Whiplash, 2014) also star in writer/director Lorene Scafaria’s (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World) film about an eternal optimist and her engaging journey of self-discovery. Synopsis:
With a new iPhone, an apartment near The Grove and a comfortable bank account left to her by her beloved late husband, Marnie Minervini (Academy Award® Winner Susan Sarandon, Best Actress, Dead Man Walking, 1995) has happily relocated from New Jersey to Los Angeles to be near her daughter Lori, a successful (but still single) screenwriter, and smother her with motherly love. But when the dozens of texts, unexpected visits and conversations dominated by unsolicited advice force Lori to draw strict personal boundaries, Marnie finds ways to channel her eternal optimism and forceful generosity to change the lives of others. While making new friends, she finds a new purpose in life and launches into an unexpected romance with a motorcycle-riding ex-cop named Zipper (Academy Award® Winner J.K. Simmons, Best Supporting Actor, Whiplash, 2014).
