Ricky Bobby a réalisé son rêve d'enfance: devenir champion de course automobile, dans le circuit NASCAR. Son titre est cependant menacé par le Français Jean Girard, un transfuge de la Formule Un. Lors d'une course remportée par ce dernier, Ricky est impliqué dans un accident, duquel il ressort avec une peur bleue du volant. Détrôné, humilié, il voit son épouse se jeter dans les bras de son coéquipier et ami d'enfance, en lui abandonnant leurs deux jeunes fils. Avec eux, Ricky retourne chez sa mère, qui l'accueille à bras ouverts. C'est alors que réapparaît son père, qui avait jadis abandonné sa famille pour se lancer dans une carrière de coureur automobile. Grâce aux méthodes d'entraînement peu orthodoxes de ce dernier, Ricky reprend confiance en lui. Bientôt, il se sent prêt à se mesurer à nouveau à Girard.

The classic comedy stars Will Ferrell (Step Brothers) as #1 NASCAR driver Ricky Bobby, who stays atop the heap thanks to a pact with his best friend and teammate, Cal Naughton, Jr. (John C. Synopsis:
