Voici le synopsis :
Lors de la guerre du Viêt Nam, les services secrets militaires américains confient au capitaine Willard la mission de trouver et d’exécuter le colonel Kurtz dont les méthodes sont jugées « malsaines ». Celui-ci, établi au-delà de la frontière avec le Cambodge, a pris la tête d’un groupe d’indigènes et mène des opérations contre l’ennemi avec une sauvagerie terrifiante. Au moyen d’un patrouilleur mis à sa disposition, ainsi que de son équipage, Willard doit remonter le fleuve jusqu’au plus profond de la jungle pour éliminer l’officier. Au cours de ce voyage, il découvre, en étudiant le dossier de Kurtz, un homme très différent de l’idée qu’il s’en faisait. Comment cet officier au parcours exemplaire a-t-il pu devenir le fou sanguinaire qu’on lui décrit ?
